The "concertos" on this disc are of a special kind: they are so-called chamber concertos, for three or four solo instruments with continuo, but no orchestra. They're not overgrown trio sonatas; the group serves as its own orchestra, with individual players splitting off for solos. (continue)

Unicorn

This program of old French music and poetry explores a very important but-little known aspect of the Middle Ages: the art of story-telling.

Centuries ago, the frontier between the musical and literary worlds was much less sharply drawn than today. This recording focuses on French narrative art, both religious and secular, from the late eleventh to the early thirteenth centuries. unicornThe recording begins with a lovers' Bestiary. In medieval times, animals both real and mythical were used to represent the various states of the human psyche: the works we perform tell of the sorrows of love (the panther), of treason and death (the unicorn), of vanity (the stag), of pride (the fox). We include simple songs (the nightingale), narrative recitations (Marie de France, the twelfth century poetess), and some of the more elaborate trouvère songs: one of these, Thibaut de Champagne's song of the unicorn, develops all the "secret" themes of courtly love, its joys and its tribulations, perils and hopes.

Gauthier de Coincy (1177-1236), prior of Vi sur Aisne, was a prolific author of religious poetry and music. Among his "Miracles of Our Lady," we have selected the cycle of Sainte Leocade (in its American première). The poems and songs tell the story of a holy statue stolen and then found in the Aisne, thanks to the intercession of the Virgin. Gauthier's text is rich in vivid images, and his melodies are among the most beautiful of the period.

The last part of this program focuses on women's texts. The "weaving song," Belle Doette, tells the romanticized story of a maiden whose lover is killed in a joust; the girl then creates the "abbey of love" where all disappointed lovers may go to escape the world. We then meet a dame de Paris, anxious to abandon a husband who beats her for the young gallant she has just met.

The songs and texts are framed by instrumental interludes, based on tunes of the French trouvères.

Una Musa Plebea

The music on this intriguing release does not cover a single genre or repertory. Instead, it attempts to answer the question "What was the local music scene like in Italy when the courts and the rich families were importing top talent from the Low Countries to write intricate polyphony?" The answer involves several kinds of music, and the creators of the album deserve credit for not trying to force it all into a single mold. Some of the music -- light, chordal, sometimes very sexy songs that went by the designation of frottola and other names -- remained popular, and similar examples were cultivated by Josquin and other Flemish-Italian composers. But the other kinds of music on the album have received much less attention. With some variations, it consists of three types. One consists of improvised stanzaic poems called ottave (eight-line stanzas), performed unaccompanied or with very light accompaniment, and sometimes dialogic, with a pair of singers re-creating an established idea. Sometimes the topic is the art of poetic improvisation itself. These performances, according to the extensive notes, fell out of fashion in the 18th century, but the Italian countryside today has yielded survivals of many of the traditions developed over the last millennium, and what's presented here are live recordings of contemporary Tuscan exponents. It's fascinating stuff if you are interested in oral poetry, and among the ultimate descendents of the music heard here are the corridos that issue from the radios in a million Mexican restaurants. There are also solo settings of cultivated Italian poems by the likes of Leonardo Giustinian (track 12), and a variety of mostly anonymous instrumental dances, featuring a richly buzzing hammer dulcimer, to break up the texture. The vocalists and instrumentalists of the Ensemble Lucidarium give attractive performances, but the real novelty is the persistence of a tradition of oral poetry that is centuries old. Recommended for anyone interested in vernacular traditions.

Sometimes billed as "Chris Hallaris," Greek composer and scholar Christodoulos Halaris is a leading expert on the study and reconstruction of ancient Greek and Byzantine music. He turned to musicology and composing after studying mathematics in Paris. Taking his cues from religious iconography and traditional popular Greek music, Halaris began reconstructing fragmentary (and sometimes nonexistent) old Greek music documents. His re-imagining of secular Byzantine music, with what Halaris identifies as roots in Hellenic song, has met with skepticism from some scholars, but it is based on a serious study of a number of sources and centuries of related developments in Greek music. He has published more than 50 compact discs of this music, and helped create the Museum of Thessalonica, devoted to Greek music. He was also involved in a significant project revolving around European medieval music. ~ James Reel, Rovi

Don Quijote de la Mancha, Romances y Músicas

Exactly 400 years since the publication of Don Quixote, Jordi Savall has conceived a project: to gather together all the airs, songs and ballads written or quoted by Cervantes, as well as those to which the author alludes throughout the novel. The result is a rich and colourful programme of music, punctuated by a reading of some of the finest passages from Don Quixote.

The rip I found contains only the spanish and english versions of the booklet. When I'll buy it I'll post the rest.

F.J.Haydn - Arie per un'Amante

14 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 137 Mb

DepositFiles - FileFactory

The title of this album comes from the fact that Haydn wrote most of these insertion arias (arias written to show off the special talents of a singer in a particular production, and substituted for the arias by the opera's composer) for his lover, Italian soprano Luigia Polzelli. Thank goodness these delightful arias have survived, although the operas into which they were originally inserted, by composers like Pasquale Anfossi, Alessandro Guglielmi, and Francesco Bianchi, are forgotten. Haydn's inventiveness and benevolence overflow in this charming music. If there is any criticism of this assortment of arias, it's that they are all relentlessly cheerful and sprightly, and all in major keys, even those with texts like, "Unhappy and unfortunate I am…." While not all these arias reveal Haydn at his most dramatically astute, they find him at his most genial. One of the arias, La moglie quando è buona, is in fact laugh-out-loud funny. Spanish soprano Núria Rial and Austrian mezzo-soprano Margot Oitzinger divide the arias. Their voices are well matched: exceptionally pure, supple, and focused, with an unmannered, effortless sounding delivery and immaculate technique. In only one aria, Infelice sventurata, in an unmercifully low passage, does Rial show any strain. Michi Gaigg leads L'Orfeo Barockorchester in a sparkling, beautifully blended accompaniment. The sound is warm and spacious, but always clear and clean.

Gidon Kremer - Happy Birthday

25 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 107Mb

This entertaining disc features an eclectic mix of pieces both serious and humorous in celebration of the Kremerata Baltica's fifth anniversary. The best of them is Franz Waxman's hilarious "Auld lang syne" Variations, four movements in the style of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, and "Shostakofiev" respectively. Joseph Ghys and François Servais team up to produce a typical 19th-century showpiece variation set, in this case on "God save the King" (a very popular tune for variations), the intention here being purely virtuosic rather than witty. Peter Heidrich's "Happy Birthday" Variations also mimics famous composers (with Haydn and Mozart being especially well differentiated), but the work concludes with a delightful series of "free" variations that let the composer's own fanciful imagination take center stage.

Teddy Bor's McMozart's eine kleine bricht Moonlicht nich Musik might be funny had P.D.Q. Bach not done the same thing on a much larger scale and with far more amusing results. Vato Kakhidze's strangely multi-cultural "Blitz" Fantasy adds melismatic vocal contributions to music that hovers somewhere between poignancy and Muzak. Three shorter pieces--Tchaikovsky's Elegy, Schnittke's Polka, and Ladislav Kupkovic's Souvenir--round out this enterprising collection. It goes without saying that the performances do full justice to the music, and also to Kremerata Baltica's avowed purpose of presenting programs that offer musical food for thought and occasional surprises in addition to more normal fare. Excellent sonics capture the festivities warmly and vividly. Clearly, a good time was had by all, though the notes take the entire project rather too seriously. [2/11/2003]

Cyrano de Bergerac - L'Autre Monde

(spoken word, plus music)

2 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 215Mb

DepositFiles - FileFactory

The text recorded here is based on the manuscript that was published in Paris in the twentieth century, rather than on the first edition of 1657, in which many of the expressions and ideas had been toned down. Alpha felt that music was essential to complement the text: indeed, music and language have much in common. The novel is combined with other works, instrumental pieces and composers, that were capable of conversing with Cyrano through their unusualness or drollery, their boldness or their melancholy.

Musical Selections Include
Dufaut: Preludes & Sarabandes
Sainte Colombe: Les Couplets I-II & Sarabande
Playford: Lady Catherine Ogle & Kemp's Jig
Hotman: Bourrée I & II
Dubuisson: Sarabande, Preludes & Allemandes
Kapsperger: Colascione, Canario & Toccata Arpeggiata
Marais: 2 Musettes
Ortiz: Recercada Quarta
Manuscrit Vaudry de Saizenay: Prelude

Benjamin Lazar et l'ensemble la Rêveuse:
Florence Bolton (Dessus et basse de viole)
Benjamin Perrot (Théorbe, guitare et luth baroques)

J.F.Fasch - Orchestral Suites

22 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 115Mb

DepositFiles - FileFactory

The overtures of the orchestral suites here recorded have, in the slow and lyrical opening sections (which return, varied, at the end) all the traditional elements of the French overture, such as triad motives, dotted rhythms, and sudden scale fragments. In the fast central passages there is a more or less regular alternation between fugal sections, homophonous tutti, and contrasting solos. Stylistically, these parts, with their sequences of short motives consisting at times of just a few notes characterised by rhythm, very much approach the galant style of Graupner and Telemann. With its light-hearted, nimble and lively developments, Fasch's music is both entertaining and brilliant.
