contents:

This 7-CD set contains the complete chamber music of the French master, with the complete “Les Nations” (a musical depiction of nationalities), Concerts Royaux, Les Gouts réunis, L’Apothéose de Corelli and de Lully and other pieces.

Instrumentation is for traversos, violins, oboes, bassoon, viola da gamba, cello, archlute and harpsichord, expertly played on original instruments by the ensemble Musica ad Rhenum conducted by specialist Jed Wentz.

As a motto for this set may serve a quotation from one of the pieces by Couperin himself: “One should not attach too much attention to the precise measure of this piece, but one should sacrifice everything to good taste”!

"And herein can be found the strength of Musica ad Rhenum's interpretation : Seldom is French Baroque music offered with so much irresistible elan, can the structure be heard so clearly and are the melodies brought out with so much love for and attention to detail." Fonoforum

J.S.Bach - Concerts avec Plusieurs Instruments

6 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - 6 RAR 600Mb

The ensemble Café Zimmermann, lead by violinist Pablo Valetti, is one of the new breed of Baroque groups offering lean, high-energy performances on historical instruments. The name refers to a Leipzig coffeehouse where Bach's Collegium Musicum instrumental ensemble might have performed in the 18th century. Imagined in that setting, the one-instrument-per-part performance here is plausible, although evidence that such performances occurred in Bach's time does not indicate that such performances were desirable. Bach himself requested an orchestra of 24 players from the Leipzig city council, and a piece like the Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068, echoes French ensembles of that size. For those down with the small-group approach, this release offers a very high level of musicianship and some fresh readings from Valetti.

A pre-eminent musician of our time, Jordi Savall adds another gem to his already extensive catalogue with Mare Nostrum (Latin for ‘Our Sea’). Savall looks to the Mediterranean Sea as a centre for ancient culture, the sea that brings us together, a dialogue of souls, performing music from Morocco, Israel, Spain and Lebanon with the usual line-up of musicians including Montserrat Figueras and Lior Elmaleh.

Jordi Savall is a fearless performer who is fascinated with facilitating musical dialogues between Eastern and Western traditions. --Npr

The Sublime Porte (Sublime Gate) was the name of the open court of the sultan, led by the Grand Vizier. It got its name from the gate to the headquarters of the Grand Vizier in Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, where the sultan held the greeting ceremony for foreign ambassadors. It was an ancient Ottoman practice to make the gates of cities and kings palaces places of assembly. Later the name came to refer to the Empire s position as gateway between Europe and Asia. Following the success of the album Istanbul, Jordi Savall crosses new boundaries between Orient and Occident. This time, the vocal traditions of the Ottoman Empire, Armenia and the Jewish Diaspora are brilliantly resuscitated. Instrumental interludes enable us to enjoy this journey through time and space. In addition to Hespèrion XXI, this album features the elite of Turkish traditional musicians under the inspired direction of Maestro Savall.

Domenico Scarlatti - Sonatas for Viola d'Amore

23 tracks - Mp3 192 Kbps - RAR 95Mb

DepositFiles - FileFactory

A deep musicological research concerning Domenico Scarlatti solo sonatas was done in 2008 by Valerio Losito and Andrea Coen: this work has determined that at least four sonatas for solo instrument and basso continuo are actually written for Viola d'amore. This discovery makes possible to relocate in a unified view the apparent incongruities of these sonatas, attributed over the years to many different instruments, like violin, mandolin, flute, oboe, etc.
This discovery has already been acquired by the musicological literature in an essay by Coen and Losito (COEN, Andrea LOSITO, Valerio Ipotesi sulla destinazione strumentale di cinque sonate per strumento melodico e basso continuo di Domenico Scarlatti, in Domenico Scarlatti Adventures, Essays to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of His Death, a cura di Massimiliano Sala e W. Dean Sutcliffe, Ad Parnassum Studies vol. 3, Bologna, Ut Orpheus, 2008, pp. 225 - 240).

Handel in Italia

2 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 191Mb

DepositFiles - FileFactory

For the second Glossa Portrait release the spotlight falls upon a singer who, since the 1990s, has been excelling in broad swathes of Italian Baroque music, whose qualities had remained under-performed and under-appreciated until musicians of sufficient quality and understanding of such repertoire had emerged. The soprano Roberta Invernizzi has been one such musician, gifted with an ability to master the technical, expressive and temperamental challenges set by composers of that time. Many are the recordings of the music of Vivaldi, Monteverdi and Alessandro Scarlatti graced by Invernizzi’s sparkling presence (and she has also added a scintillating theatrical verve to many of the incursions into Neapolitan opera buffa in the company of Antonio Florio).

Given Roberta Invernizzi’s notable successes on stage (and on recordings) in portraying some of Handel’s more famous female characters from the operas of his maturity, it was an inspired choice of Fabio Bonizzoni to involve the Milanese singer in his series of Le Cantate Italiane di Handel, and Invernizzi appeared on no less than five of the seven discs in that greatly-admired series. This two-disc Portrait album draws on those recordings to highlight the delicious characterizations of Invernizzi in Handel’s vivid and visceral portrayals of nymphs and goddesses such as Diana, Cloris, Amarilis, Lidia and Fili, Arcadian characters one and all but nonetheless human in personality. Alongside the opportunity to experience the “feminine” viewpoint explored through arias from Handel’s Italian Cantatas there is a chance also to enjoy with this new release the instrumental qualities of players found in Fabio Bonizzoni’s La Risonanza.

G.F.Handel - Deidamia

3 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 270 Mb

Despite being Handel's last Italian opera composed for London before he turned his full attention to English oratorios, Deidamia shows that Handel was still at the peak of his powers. Alan Curtis's recording reveals the subtlety in Handel's musical characterisations of Ulisse (brilliantly sung by Anna Bonitatibus) and Deidamia (a stunning and emotional performance by Simone Kermes). Il Complesso Barocco demonstrate that the score has many beauties that were almost entirely unfamiliar to even the most dedicated Handel lovers.

G.F.Handel - Oreste

2 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 209 Mb

During the 1730s Handel padded out his London opera seasons with pasticci, assembled using arias by his favourite contemporaries (notably Vinci). There are three exceptions that consist entirely of Handel's own music: Oreste, Alessandro Severo and Jupiter in Argos. In these forgotten operas, Handel cannily adapted a mixture of old and recent arias to a new libretto, and composed a few new pieces where necessary. Scholars have considered them unworthy of inclusion in the accepted canon, but this seems rather snobbish if one remembers that Handel used the same formula to assemble Rinaldo (1711) for his London debut.

Pierre Attaignant - Preludes, Chansons & Dances For The Lute

22 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 88Mb

This is essentially small, intimate music, so perhaps it is best not to make too much of it. Still, there is something seductive about these little lute pieces by Pierre Attaingnant (1494-1552), a contemporary of Rabelais who obviously shared that immortal author's excitement over being part of an age when the sheer joys of being human were about to be rediscovered. From his cramped printing shop in the Left Bank, not far from the Sorbonne, Attaignant produced quiet yet extraordinary music for the lute. Hopkinson Smith, without doubt the finest lute player in the world today, here follows his explorations of Iberian lute music with this revealing glimpse at the sounds of the Paris of Rabelais. It is a delicious recording. Octavio Roca

D.Scarlatti - The Complete Sonatas

38 CD - MP3 192Kbps - 45 RAR (3,65Gb)

DepositFiles - FileFactory

IMPORTANT: I noticed that in the original release some of the sonatas in Volume 1 were incomplete (K.20, 163, 172, 177, 178, 180, 185, 189, 191, 194) and one was missing (K.176). That is now fixed.

What will make this series by Richard Lester the first (and currently the only) truly complete recording of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas is the inclusion in Volume 7 of works extra to the heretofore accepted fifteen-Volume corpus, works authenticated by W. Dean Sutcliffe, author of The Keyboard Works of Domenico Scarlatti; he also supplied some manuscripts. Such manuscripts in Scarlatti's own hand are rare. Lester also points out that, although the Kirkpatrick numbers are used throughout this project, the chronology of the sets follows Maria Barbara's manuscripts.

Look Down, Harmonious Saint, HWV 124 (*)
Robert Harre-Jones (alto)

The King's Consort
dir. Robert King

(*)The origins of the cantata Look down, harmonious saint are slightly uncertain, for it is thought that the work was originally intended to be part of Handel’s oratorio Alexander’s Feast, whose St Cecilia’s Day Ode in praise of music by Dryden was augmented by Newburgh Hamilton’s The Power of Music. Alexander’s Feast was first performed at Covent Garden in February 1736, but Look down, harmonious saint was not included. Instead it appeared in the cantata Cecilia, volgi un sguardo which was performed at the King’s Theatre, Haymarket, in the same month. Whatever Handel’s original intentions and reasons, on its own Look down, harmonious saint happily forms a small cantata, with a da capo aria preceded by an accompanied recitative. In particular, the central section, ‘It charms the soul’, is given a ravishing setting, full of suspensions and rich harmonies, before the virtuoso opening Allegro returns.

Johann Sebastian Bach - The Cantatas

50 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - 50 RAR - 6.1 Gb

For those who are not familiar with the Bach Collegium Japan, it is an orchestra and choir founded in 1990 by their director and keyboard player Masaaki Suzuki. The orchestra is renowned as Japan’s leading period instrument players applying their historically informed knowledge of sacred baroque music and specialising in the work of J.S. Bach. The chosen venue for Suzuki’s cycle of recordings has been the Shoin Women’s University Chapel in Kobe, Japan.
Suzuki really is a master of his art directing impeccable vocal and instrumental performances.

I added to each folder the score of the cantatas and I hope this is good enough to celebrate post n° 1001. Enjoy.

G.F.Handel - Arminio

2 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 209Mb

DepositFiles - FileFactory

Arminio was first performed in London in January 1737 when Handel’s rivalry with the competing ‘Opera of the Nobility’ was at its height. Three months later, exhausted, the composer suffered a breakdown in health and later left for Aachen in search of a cure. Further operas followed after his return to London but the great triumphs of earlier seasons were not to be repeated. The text of Arminio, by one of Handel’s favourite librettists, Antonio Salvi, is rather a good one; and its strong dramatic sense and above-average literary merit is matched, as usual, by some fine musical characterisation. The story concerns the German leader Hermann (Arminius) whose fight for freedom against Roman occupiers, early in the first century AD is ultimately successful. Alan Curtis and his mainly Italian ensemble Il Complesso Barocco have already provided us with the only recorded versions of Handel’s Admeto and Rodrigo. This new venture is comparably stylish, briskly moving and mainly well sung. The prevailing seriousness of the piece is established at once by its overture and by the duet of Arminius and his wife Tusnelda. But there is plenty of expressive variety and a wealth of fine arias – ‘Quella fiamma’ (Act II), with its brilliant oboe obbligato, is among the most arresting of them – the changing colours of whose music is a constant delight. Curtis directs all with rhythmic vitality.
