The interpretation of the numerous dialogues (sung by one singer who change his voice according to the characters) has favored the embodiement of the characters from the commedia dell'arte, trying to play beyond the stereotypes embodied by the masks. While in total respect of the use of the time, the interpretation gives way to “sperimentazione” either by trust the text to a single singer and to the attention placed in the musical research, as evidenced by the choice of instruments. Following the indications of the author, as found in the notes to the "Prudenza Giovenile", a narrator reads the verses of introduction to each scene, “accompagnata dalla grazia dei musicisti che concertano un’amabile melodia a loro gusto”.

Old J.S. must have been a lute buff because he owned one along with two lute-harpsichords, and composed as well as arranged a significant number of works for it throughout his career. These are generously represented here in this impressive collection of original pieces (BWV 996-999) as well as transcriptions (BWV 964, 990, 995, 1000 and 1006a), impeccably played by Elizabeth Farr on this magnificent instrument…Suffice it to say she is a keyboard artist of exceptional ability. Technical mastery, precision of attack and well-judged tempos characterize her playing, making this an outstanding release.

Elizabeth Farr plays the lute-harpsichord, a two-keyboard instrument with a combination of gut and brass strings. It was built for her by Keith Hill.

The principal form of the Italian solo concerto was the Ritornello movement which proceeds in successive brief musical events, alternating tutti ritornelli and soli, which contrast one another thematically and texturally. Its increasing popularity went hand in hand with the heydey of te violin as a virtuoso instrument and the activity of the greatest violin builders - Amati, Guarneri et Stradivari.

Ensemble Guidantus is a small chamber group formed in 1995 out of the homonymous orchestra and it plays a lively part in the Italian music scene. The sparkling and polished performances combine mastery of the score with a clear and individual interpretation, the result of a decade of aesthetic and philological study.

Continuously seeking new musical suggestions, Ensemble's repertoire covers all of the works of Vivaldi, particularly unpublished or rarely performed pieces, as well as other celebrated 17th and 18th centuries composers such as Arcangelo Corelli, Benedetto Marcello, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Domenico Scarlatti, Domenico Cimarosa.

This 10 CD Limited Edition was released in preparation for René Jacobs’ 65th birthday on 30th October 2011 and features complete recordings for Sony Classical and DHM combined for the first time in a truly unique edition.
René Jacobs came to fame as a countertenor and in recent years has become renowned as a conductor of Baroque and early Classical opera. The Kuijken brothers, Gustav Leonhardt and Alfred Deller all encouraged him to pursue a career as a countertenor, and he quickly became known as one of the best of his time. He recorded a large amount of Baroque music by such composers as Antonio Cesti, d'India, Ferrari, Marenzio, Lambert, Guédron, William Lawes and others. He also sang in much-acclaimed recordings of Bach’s major works such as the St Matthew Passion led by Gustav Leonhardt, which is also included in this set.
More recently, as a conductor, Jacobs has recorded numerous operas and sacred and secular works of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. His recordings have won numerous awards, including a Grammy Award, Gramophone’s "Record of the Year", the “III Premio Traetta”, and numerous European awards.
Jacobs regularly conducts such orchestras and ensembles as Concerto Köln, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Freiburger Barockorchester, Nederlands Kamerkoor and RIAS Kammerchor for recordings and concert tours. In 1992, Jacobs was invited to conduct the Berlin State Opera.
