Mozart - The Complete Piano Sonatas

6 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 569Mb

Brautigam uses a copy of a 1795 fortepiano with spectacular results. The attack of this instrument is much more defined, (...). His tempos are fast, (...). Recording quality is superb, a(...). I used to think Mozart's sonatas were sluggish and not of the same caliber of much of his other compositions (Haydn's sonatas seemed to sparkle in comparison). With this set, I have changed my mind... truly first class. (Amazon customer)

Piroska Vitárius, violin

Savaria Baroque Orchestra
dir. Pál Németh
Venice, 9 Dec 1745 - Venice, 18 May 1818

Italian composer, violinist and singer.
Unusually for a woman composer at that time, there appear to have been no other musicians in her family and she became famous entirely through her own efforts.
In 1753 she was admitted to the Ospedale dei Mendicanti in Venice, not as an orphan but as a musician who would be an asset to their all-female choir and orchestra.
She must have been an outstanding violinist since in 1760 she was allowed to go to Padua to study with Tartini; as the lessons were delayed, Tartini wrote her a long letter explaining his violin playing methods and the best way to practise.
It was copied in Padua before it was sent and by 1770, because of its importance, it was in print in Italy, shortly followed by translations into English (by Charles Burney), German and French. (...) (segue).

De Fragilitate - Piae Cantiones

22 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 130Mb

DepositFiles - FileFactory

The Piae Cantiones (1582) is Finland’s one and only collection of early music and reflection of Europe’s medieval musical heritage. Zefiro Torna performs these beautiful carols, devote and student songs with 15th-16th century instruments and includes a children’s choir. The discrete but charming use of a kantele introduces a Finnish-ing touch to the sound.

The majority of the compositions belongs to the Germanic-Bohemian cantio tradition. There are also links to French, Spanish and Italian sources and to Flemish masters such as Jacob Obrecht. The religious songs — the majority being Christmas songs — are grouped together according to the liturgical year. The remaining songs deal with the transitory character of earthly life, the human condition, the life of schoolchildren, Biblical subjects and the rebirth of Nature in the spring.

Very few collections of music from the 16th century are so strongly anchored in contemporary musical life as the Piae Cantiones are in Finland today, becoming a fixed part of Finnish choral and religious music with the flowering of Finnish nationalism and romanticism in the early 20th century. Variants of these cantiones can be found in Finland’s religious folk music, whilst many composers have also made arrangements of the songs, including Jean Sibelius in his ‘Carminalia’.

“These 24 of the 74 songs from Piae Cantiones form not only a wonderful programme, permitting a variety of styles ranging from pure medieval to rustic and folksy but are also delightful performances….There are delicious and always aptly chosen instrumental contributions, including local colour from the Finnish kantele, and the children sing disarmingly with an ardent, earthly grace, like angelic urchins….”

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

DepositFiles - FileFactory

Violence against women and girls takes many forms and is widespread throughout the globe. […] On this International Day, I urge governments and partners around the world to harness the energy, ideas and leadership of young people to help us to end this pandemic of violence.  Only then will we have a more just, peaceful and equitable world.Ban Ki-moon (UN Secretary-General)  (link to the whole message)

By resolution 54/134 of 17 December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and invited governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designed to raise public awareness of the problem on that day. Women's activists have marked 25 November as a day against violence since 1981. This date came from the brutal assassination in 1960, of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, on orders of Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961).

Since the early days, Christianity has shown a reverence and respect towards virgins, usually young girls who rejected the advances of the occupying Roman forces, arguing that they were instead married to Christ. Often, these girls were raped, tortured and crucified by the authorities, and such atrocities extended through the Dark and Middle Ages and beyond, in cultures all over the world.

This stirring new CD sets Gregorian, Ambrosian chant and two episodes from the life of St Agnes, creating a musical memorial to female victims of violence and abuse, raising a plea for freedom, respect and peace to be established in today's world. Poems and texts by Tehlia Lieberman and Marthe Link, read in English, punctuate the chants, and there are moving accounts by women raped in Central Africa and girls forced to enter homes for single mothers and give up their children.

The Gregorian Schola Karolus Magnus from Nijmegen (the Netherlands)  & Brilliant just released their latest CD “The Martyred Virgins: A Gregorian memorial to female victims of violence”.  It features Gregorian music interspersed with spoken words (in English) describing violence against women, historically.   The CD is accompanied by a booklet of 48 pages with text in English, Latin and Dutch.  On it, one can also hear parts of the testimonials of three Rwandan women who were profiled in “The Men Who Killed Me” (Adela, Marie Jeanne and Clementine).  The music is intended to be a tribute to all women all over the world who faced or are still facing violence.

According to the producers: “[It] Started as a project honouring Saint Agnes and all other female martyrs venerated in the Catholic church, it grew into a sung monument in which violence against all women is commemorated.  Typical here is that ‘Martyred Virgins’ does not only honour the women who died for their faith, nor only the women who were physically violated because they believed.  The ‘Martyred Virgins’ is also a monument for the woman and her role in today’s society.  And thus the Schola veers off into a different direction: the old Gregorian chant serves today’s needs.

On March 8, International Women’s Day, the Schola began a tour through the Netherlands to raise awareness of violence against women.  For more information about the Gregorian choir and the CD, see THIS LINK.

The CD (8 euros) can be ordered by sending an e-mail to mr. J. Bernards (janbernards@kabelfoon.nl) or through Amazon ($6,99) via THIS LINK.

Telemann -. Wind Concertos

7 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 327 + Mb

Germany's CPO label has presented the efforts of performers who have doggedly unearthed unknown music of various periods, especially the eighteenth century. With the voluminous corpus of concertos by Telemann, many of which exist only in manuscript, they enter a field with a lot of still-uncharted territory. This set of wind concertos is one of the label's most useful releases despite a few quirks. The music offers a good quick overview of the various influences at work in Telemann's concertos, which began with the seventeenth century concerto structure of a sequence of short elements resembling rhetorical figures but overlaid them with Italian and (especially) French influences. There are hints of Handel, Couperin, Corelli, Bach, and other composers, but there is a lightness and enthusiasm throughout that is entirely Telemann's own. Almost everything Telemann touched he treated with imagination, and the concertos here are full of delightful touches.

The varied forces of Georg Philipp Telemann's instrumental music require a flexible ensemble to give a sense of the music's range. In this case, two German historical-instrument ensembles, La Stagione Frankfurt and the veteran Camerata Köln, join forces for a set of concertos with a delightfully varied set of soloists. This music has the odd combination of lightness and unorthodoxy that tends to either attract or repel those who listen to Telemann.

La Stagione Frankfurt has been in the forefront of Germany’s period-instrument movement since its founding in 1988 by current director, Michael Schneider. They have toured Europe extensively and have recorded, mainly for cpo, works by various Baroque and early Classical composers. Telemann, however, is a special interest for Schneider, who was awarded the Telemann Prize in 2000 by the city of Magdeburg for his work on behalf of the composer.

The Song of the Sibyl (Catalan: El Cant de la Sibil·la is a liturgical drama and a Gregorian chant, the lyrics of which compose a prophecy describing the Apocalypse, which has been performed at some churches of Majorca (Balearic Islands, Spain) and Alghero (Sardinia, Italy) in Catalan language on Christmas Eve nearly uninterrruptedly since medieval times. It was declared a Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on November 16, 2010.

Several versions, differing in text and music, exist.

- - Latin Sibyl, from 10th-11th century, which incorporates fragments of The City of God (XVIII, 23) by St. Augustine
- - Provençal Sibyl, from the 13th century, reflecting influence of troubadour poetry
- - Catalan Sibyl. The latest and most ornamented version. Incorporates popular traditions of Balearic Islands. Refrain of this version is sometimes written for three or four voices

The author of The Song of the Sibyl is unknown. The prophecy was first recorded as an acrostic poem in Greek by bishop Eusebius of Caesarea and later translated into Latin by Saint Augustine in The City of God. It appeared again in the 10th century in different locations across Catalonia, Italy, Castile, and France in the sermon Contra judeos, later inserted into the reading of the sixth lesson of the second nocturn of matins and was performed as an integral part of the liturgy.

This chant was originally sung in Latin and under the name of Judicii Signum, but from the 13th on, versions in Catalan are found.

These early Catalan versions of the Judici Signum were not directly translated from Latin. Instead, they all come from a previous adaptation in Provençal, which proves the huge popularity this song must have had in the past.

Amongst the Catalan texts which come from this common root, there is a 14th century Codex kept in the Archives of the Majorcan Diocese, which was rediscovered in 1908. Oral transmission and the lack of written scripts has caused the various old texts in the vernacular to suffer many modifications over time, which has led to a diversity of versions.

The Song of the Sibyl was almost totally abandoned throughout Europe after the Council of Trent (held in 25 sessions from 1545 to 1563) declared its performance was forbidden. Nevertheless, it was restored on Mallorca as soon as in 1575.

Originally, the Song of the Sibyl was sung in a Gregorian melody and, as it can be seen in the Codex previously mentioned, the musical accompaniment that was played in Majorca, with the exception of some variations, was the same documented in other places across the Iberian Peninsula. Today, it cannot be ascertained for certain when the Song of the Sibyl was sung to this Gregorian melody, but most likely until the 16th or 17th century. Oral transmission of the song caused, as it did with the text, the birth of different variations and models. The interest this chant produced amongst early Musicologists and Folklorists of the 19th century led to the transcription of the different known versions of the song. The versions still played nowadays take these transcriptions as model.

Handel - Israel in Egypt

2 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 202 Mb

DepositFiles - FileFactory

Using some of the finest early-music soloists of the day, Parrott and his forces give posterity a recording that welds tightly focused emotion to a laudable and uncommon feel for the music. The soloists produce appropriately light but well-focused tone and display an ability to negotiate the intricacies of Handel’s notes evenly and with an exceptional grasp of the phrasing required for successful performance. The choral lines are carefully etched and meticulously balanced, resulting in a superlative overall sound that—in spite of the small choir—is rich and capable of exceeding power when required.
Without groveling to historical convention, Parrott achieves an enviable—and perhaps even the ultimate—marriage of musicology and musicality. The choruses and arias in parts II and III are conservatively paced, never rushed or driven, but I never feel that the tempos are sluggish or flaccid to the detriment of the music. Overall, there is deft execution, impeccable ensemble, and precise intonation. Parrott’s recording of Israel in Egypt is built on cognizance of Handel’s musical architecture and a desire to seek and master what lies beyond the printed page. All of this adds up to another inductee into our Classical Hall of Fame.
Please note that this set is available as an import only and can be found online as either a new or pre-loved product on amazon.com. Unfortunately, there are no texts included in the bare-bones booklet, but they can be downloaded at www.virginclassics.com.

J.S. Bach's favorite son-apparently a drunk and a difficult man-wrote handsome music of great rhythmic and harmonic variety, which this CD highlights. The harpsichord concerto is very rich, with the soloist and orchestra bickering back and forth nicely. The two Sinfonias differ in temperament: the D major is formal and elegant; the F major is more jumpy and entertaining. Similarly, the two adagios and fugues recorded here differ greatly. The one in F minor dazzles us by its close, while the D minor is severe but equally interesting. W.F. Bach sounds little like either his father or his better-known brother, C.P.E. Bach. He's quirkier and not at all predictable. The disc is full of surprises. --Robert Levine

Tracklist:

1. Sinfonia in D major (used as prelude to cantata "Dies ist der Tag"), F. 64 (BR C8)
2. Sinfonia in D minor ("Adagio and Fugue"), F. 65 (BR C7)
3. Harpsichord Concerto in E minor, F. 43 (BR C 12)
4. Prelude and fugue (after W. F. Bach) for violin, viola & bass in F minor, (K. 404a/6)
5. Sinfonia for strings in F major ("Dissonant"), F. 67 (BR C2)
